3D Touch on Android N !

On 13th of April, Android released Android N Developer Preview 2. Company introduced all new emojis, and better app folders and Vulkan - a new 3D rendering API. But many are interested to know that Android may start supporting 3D Touch. In the latest Android N Developer Preview have code that alludes 3D Touch-like feature.

But the fact is that, existing Android devices doesn't have physical 3D Touch capability. that's why developer had to mimic the 3D touch functionality using long presses and swiping down on the icon.

Developers can define shortcuts which users can expose in the launcher to help them perform actions quicker.
launcher shortcuts let your users quickly start common or recommended tasks within your app. Each shortcut contains an intent, which links the shortcut to a specific action in your app.

So, users won't get iPhone like 3D touch and they won't be able to use full peek-and-pop functionality. In Google’s documentation, 3D Touch is only useful for the app icon itself; Google called it ‘launcher shortcuts’.

4 types of actions can be performed with ‘launcher shortcuts:

  1. Navigating users to a particular location in a mapping app.

  2. Sending messages to a friend in a communication app.

  3. Playing the next episode of a TV show in a media app.

  4. Loading the last save point in a gaming app.

Yet, it’s a preview of what Google I/O 2016 may bring developers. We will have to wait till its not official.
