TRAI Bans Facebook’s Free Basics and different pricing services

Today, India’s Telecoms Regulator issued the 'Prohibition of Discriminatory Tariffs for Data Services Regulations, 2016'. The authority have issued rule against differential and discriminatory pricing of data on the basis of content.

This rule will affect most controversial service Free Basics in India. This rule will also affect similar services  which provides different data services.

In an effort to promote the so-called-philanthropic project. Recently company claimed that Free Basics have 15 million users in more than 35 countries around the globe, and company also issued a survey. Company also released an as Shows “How it can be helpful for Empowering Women”.

TRAI issued a Consultation Paper On 'Differential Pricing for Data Services' in December, 2015. Authority Received huge response.

Here are new Rules :

  1. No service provider shall offer or charge discriminatory tariffs for data services on the basis of content.

  2. No service provider shall enter into any arrangement, agreement or contract, by whatever name called, with any person, natural or legal, that has the effect of discriminatory tariffs for data services being offered or charged by the service provider for the purpose of evading the prohibition in this regulation.

  3. Reduced Tariff for accessing or providing emergency services, or at times of public emergency has been permitted.

  4. Financial disincentives for contravention of the regulation have also been specified.

Facebook’s future is dependent on growth from emerging markets and India is the second largest market for Facebook after the United States.
